Words of Wisdom

The Kingdom of God. What in the world is that?

The kingdom of God happens when medical supplies find their way into the hands of a grandfather who’s doctoring his AIDS-infected son in Zambia. The kingdom of God happens when an elderly widow’s house in the inner city is renovated without a cent of her own money. It happens when a thirty-six-year-old married man is greeted with the opportunity of infidelity but chooses against the advice of his impulses. It happens when a forty-eight-year-old man searching for recognition and achievement discovers grace for the very first time. And it happens when a eight-year-old Russian orphan experiences value and worth for the very first time.

The kingdom of God happens today when a teenage girl take ownership of her life and pulls herself out of an abusive relationship. The kingdom of God happens when a family blindsided by tragedy is overwhelmed by the support and empathy of their friends. The kingdom of God happens when a person who’s been wronged chooses forgiveness rather than vengeance. It happens when porn addicts take steps toward releasing their addiction. And it happens when a husband and wife take steps toward ending years of damaging conversation that’s become their marriage norm.

The kingdom of God is taking place all around us at this very second, and obviously, there is a sense in which the kingdom of God doesn’t just happen on its own accord. It doesn’t just appear, like “Voila!” No, it is actually quite real and takes place because people have taken it upon themselves to bring about change, either in their own lives or in their surroundings.
